David Ian (featuring Acacia) – Vintage Christmas Wonderland

David Ian - Vintage Christmas WonderlandDavid Ian (featuring Acacia)
Vintage Christmas Wonderland (Prescott)
Released – September 24, 2013

A follow to “Vintage Christmas,” a couple of years ago (a recording I also liked), “Vintage Christmas Wonderland” is a five-track EP that rounds up some of the same performers – the sister duo of “Tal and Acacia” backing on “Jingle Bells,” and Acacia alone on a sweet “Angels We Have Heard On High.”

It’s a little bit jazz, a little piano bar, with just enough of Acacia’s sweet vocals to make it unique and endearing. Perfect for when the kids have been put to bed, and it’s just the two of you, a little something to clink in the glass, and that warm fire.

Highly recommended.

David Ian (with Acacia) – Vintage Christmas

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, you’ll be playing Christmas tunes shortly – here’s the last of the 2011 recommendations.  I’ll do some links to favorites from previous years soon.

David Ian (with Acacia) –
Vintage Christmas (Prescott)
Released – November, 2011

David Ian (Dave Ghazarian) is best known as a guitarist for Contemporary Christian band “Superchick,” known best for a somewhat intense take on the genre. This offering, then, is surpringly gentle – featuring Mr. Ian on piano nicely channeling Vince Guaraldi.

Assisting on four of these tracks is Acacia Wulfing, of the Christian sister duo “Tal and Acacia.” And that’s what brings this disc into my orbit. Ms. Wulfing’s voice has a dreamy quality – and the ability to work with music that transcends genres from Contemporary Christian to the soundtrack of “Friends With Benefits.”

Quite a feat. Quite a voice.

Those four tracks featuring Ms. Wulfing are “Have Yourself A Merry Litttle Christmas,” along with “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” “The Christmas Song,” and a duet with Andre Miguel Mayo, “Christmas Time With You.” That’s the lone original tune on the disc, a smartly swingy way to wrap the disc.

If Mr. Ian is looking for a new market for his music, he could have a go on piano – so long as he brings Ms. Wulfing along.

Classy and classic, This one will be a late-night favorite, with a cup of nog and a log in the fireplace, and is very highly recommended.

Speaking of stockings, The Puppini Sisters are out with a new disc – just in time for the holidays.  They take on the silver screen this time with a disc titled “Hollywood,” (Verve Forecast), with their unique take on everything from “Get Happy” to Grace Kelly’s “True Love.”

And a deliciously campy “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend.”  This disc is highly recommended, as well.
